Things that make you go ‘Wow!’

I don’t really do excitement. Or fun.

It probably goes back to childhood expectations of birthdays and Christmas (only a few days apart) and my, clearly ungracious, disappointment of such times.

Over the years, fun crushed by those who tried to force it or mocked me because of it. Excitement diminished by friends who didn’t arrive and those who didn’t stay… not just in childhood…

I learned at an early stage the truth of Alexander Pope’s saying: ‘expect nothing and you will never be disappointed‘. It’s held me in good stead, nurturing an optimistic outlook and positive perspective.

And just occasionally, the unexpected happens. Something that makes me go ‘Wow!’.

WowLike walking in to The Forum in Bath for a concert this week. A beautiful 1934 cinema still with its wonderful, original Art Deco features. I love Art Deco. I even said ‘Wow!’ to the usher who was waiting there. It stirred an inner part of me. It sat with me in the seat. It gave a sense of joy deep down. (So yes, I do do joy – albeit in a rather understated way.)

WowJoy comes when seeing those I love and know make progress in challenging situations and also through the gift of an unexpected new friendship in recent months.

Then there are those shared moments of joy: a sunset, a hot air balloon… you have your own, I hope.

On this World Mental Health Day there will be many people who don’t experience fun, excitement or joy. People for whom the events of life and other influences have resulted in significant mental illness such as depression and anxiety. A life which has been crushed or diminished. A life in which optimism and positivity are absent.

Maybe you know someone who could do with a bit of joy.

Something to make them go ‘wow’ even if it’s without the capital letter and exclamation mark. Or is rather understated. Or even ungraciously received.

Something that shows they are a neighbour who is loved.

Something that might stir a bit of joy in an inner part of themselves.
